In Korea, school playgrounds established with either natural turfgrass or artificial turf are gradually increasing. However, there are few studies on the management of the natural turfgrass and artificial turf playgrounds of school. The data in this study are based on questionnaires received from 50 schools (27 natural turfgrass and 23 artificial turf playground schools) of 260 elementary, middle, and high schools where one of two turfgrass types of playground is installed. The main problems that occurred in the school 's natural turfgrass playground were in the order of pest and weeds, drainage, and traffic stress. In artificial turf playgrounds, crumb rubber loss and user injury were major problems. The response of 59.3% and 65.2% of the participants showed that they spent less than 1,000 thousand won for the annual management of the school's natural turfgrass and artificial turf playground, respectively. From the expenditure budget, it was used mainly for the purchase of pesticide and fertilizer in the management of the natural turfgrass playground, but artificial turf playground management required turf maintenance, removal and replace of crumb rubber. Both types of playground respondents answered that they mainly get management information through the internet Web site. Respondents in natural turfgrass playgrounds hoped for human resource support (51.9%) of national and local governments, but respondents in artificial turf playgrounds indicated that budget support (52.2%) was the most important.
